Generative Engine Optimization: Why Ghanaian Businesses Can't Ignore AI Search in 2026

Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Gemini are already answering questions your customers used to Google. Here's what actually changes for a Ghanaian business.

A growing share of the questions your customers used to type into Google are now being answered directly by AI: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and similar tools that summarise an answer instead of handing over ten blue links. Marketers have started calling the practice of optimising for this Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and 2026 is the year it stopped being optional.

If you run a business in Accra, Kumasi, or anywhere else in Ghana and your website was built for classic Google SEO, some of what worked then still works, but not all of it, and not in the way you'd expect.

Old SEO chased keywords. AI search chases intent.

Traditional SEO was built around matching specific keywords and phrases. AI search engines don't work that way. They map broader topics and the intent behind a question, then synthesise an answer from whichever sources they trust most on that subject. Writing a page stuffed with "web design Accra" no longer does what it used to. Writing a page that clearly and directly answers "how do I get a website built in Accra" does much more.

Three things AI search actually rewards

Based on how these systems are known to rank sources, three things matter disproportionately:

  • Question-based content that answers directly, early. Pages that state a clear answer in the first 50 words or so, before the explanation rather than after it, get pulled into AI-generated answers far more often than pages that make the reader scroll to find the point.
  • Real authority signals. Backlinks from other credible sites still matter, arguably more than before, because AI engines use them as a trust signal when deciding which source to summarise.
  • Structured data (schema markup). Technical markup that tells search engines exactly what your business is, what it does, and where. This is how AI systems build what's called an "entity" model of your business, rather than guessing from unstructured text.

Multimodal and local matter more, not less

The AI platforms driving this shift (Google's Gemini, GPT-4o, Meta's Llama 4 among them) don't just read text. They process images, video and audio together when forming an answer, which is one more reason a site built purely as flat text pages is leaving signal on the table.

AI search has also leaned harder into localisation. When someone asks an AI assistant "which web design agency covers Accra" or "best caterer near East Legon," the AI applies geographic context and draws on local business data. The same Google Business Profile and NAP (name, address, phone) consistency work we've always recommended for local SEO turns out to matter just as much, if not more, for AI search.

Why this is worth the effort

Early data from marketers tracking this shift suggests AI-referred traffic converts significantly better than traditional organic search traffic. Visitors arriving via an AI-generated answer tend to be further along in deciding what they want, because the AI has already done some of the filtering for them.

What to actually do about it

  1. Rewrite your most important pages to answer the obvious question in the first sentence or two. Save the elaboration for after.
  2. Add schema markup for your business type, services, location and reviews. This is a one-time technical job, not an ongoing content task.
  3. Keep investing in real backlinks and reviews. Nothing about AI search makes reputation-building obsolete; if anything, it raises the bar.
  4. Don't neglect your Google Business Profile. It's still one of the strongest local-entity signals you have.
  5. Treat images and video as content, not decoration. Multimodal AI systems use them as part of the answer, not just the page.

None of this replaces good SEO fundamentals. It builds on them. A site with no content, no structure and no local signals won't suddenly rank because you added a line of schema markup. But a site that's already doing the fundamentals well is exactly the kind of source these systems are built to surface.
